Are you hosting for the first time or the first time in a while? We know it can feel overwhelming to prepare and pull off a meal for guests, especially if you don’t have much experience. That’s why we’ve narrowed down five simple tips to help you prepare with confidence.

What in the world are you going to cook? Start with something most people enjoy and that feels manageable for you. A comforting soup or pasta dish is often a great choice. Hosting day probably isn’t the time to try out a brand-new recipe!

Before you plan your menu, ask guests about any allergies or dietary restrictions. Once your menu is set, you can move on to the next steps. Need some inspiration? Check out our Beef Stew recipe or Cooking for 25 post for crowd-pleasing ideas.

This is your list-making and grocery-shopping stage. Check your pantry to see what you already have, then make a detailed list of what you still need. Shop a few days ahead so you’re not running around on the day your guests arrive.

This is where you can get ahead. Prepare anything that can be made or prepped early:

-Chop lettuce or veggies for a salad the day before.
-Bake dessert or prep cookie dough ahead of time.
-Get your main dish ready in a slow cooker or pop it in the fridge overnight so it’s hands-off when guests arrive.

Completing these small, non–time-sensitive tasks in advance frees up your energy for last-minute details later.

Set yourself up for success by rearranging your usual routine. Can any chores be done early or delegated?

-Maybe deep clean the kitchen the day before.
-Skip an errand or class that can wait.
-Ask someone else to pick up the kids so you can focus on cooking.

A little schedule flexibility can go a long way toward a smoother, calmer hosting day.

Even with all your prep, day-of tasks can add up fast. Estimate how long you’ll need to finish cooking, and then start an hour earlier than that. Trust us, that extra cushion will come in handy!

Hosting family or friends is such a beautiful way to serve and build community. It doesn’t have to be intimidating—like anything else, practice makes it easier (and more fun!). We hope these tips help you take that first step toward confident, joy-filled hosting.

Happy Hosting,
